Simple Present tense and Simple past tense

1. Simple Present Tense

a. The simple present is used to:

• give your opinion (e.g. I like ice cream. i don't like spicy food.)
• talk about schedules (e.g. The library opens at eight. it doesn't open at 7.)
• talk about daily habits routine actions (e.g. Sara eats a cheese for breakfast every day. She doesn't eat cereal)
• give acts (e.g. The earth circles the sun. The moon doesn't circle the sun)

b. pattern:

• Positive Form (+)

                        S+do/does+not+verb1+o+Adverb

• Negative Form (-) 

S+do/does+not+verb 1+o+Adverb 

• Interrogative Form (?)

Do/Does+S+Verb1+o+Adverb?

Examples:

  - Nancy Works in i a restaurant downtown.
  - Nancy Doesn't work in a restaurant downtown
  - Does Nancy work in a restaurant downtown?
Examples:
  -She Drives to work every morning.
  -He says he plays football on the weekends.

• The verb to be

The verb to be is the most important verb in the English language. In this case, we do not us 'do' or 'does' in positive, negative and interrogative forms.

Example: Bradd Pitt is an actor.

2. Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense usually used to express action or activity in the past in certain time. Adverb of time used in simple past tense: this morning, this afternoon;yesterday, the day before yesterday, just now; last week/month/year/sunday, etc; two weeks ago, three months ago, two days ago, etc.

a. Pattern

• Positive Form (+) S+Verb2+O+Adverb
• Negative Form (-) S+did not+Verb 1+O+Adverb?
• Interrogative Form (?) Did+S+Verb1+O+Adverb?

 Examples:

- Mia graduated from Tunas Bangsa Vocational School last year.

- Mia did not graduate from Tunas Bangsa Vocational last year.

- Did Mia graduate from Tunas Bangsa Vocational last year?

b. The Verb to be:

In past form, we use to be "was" as the verb of the subject I, he, she, and it.

Example: Brian was a student of SMK Darma.
